After the resounding success of the film “Drive”, many film critics and ordinary “cinephiles” began to wait for the new work of the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn. And so, on May 22 of this year, the premiere of his new film “Only God Forgives” took place at the Cannes Film Festival. True, the film did not cause the expected delight; on the contrary, many critics criticized the film. But what in the director’s new work caused such a reaction??

The picture tells us a https://casxcasino.co.uk/login/ slightly unusual, but generally simple story of revenge – a man killed a very young girl of easy virtue, and her father killed him. It seems like nothing special, but the story also includes a stern Thai cop, the brother and mother of that guy. And it is on the relationship of this trinity that the rather simple structure of the film is built. The retelling of the plot makes no sense, but certain moments in it seem far-fetched and cause exceptional bewilderment with their logic.
But, apparently, the author himself realized that the plot in his film turned out to be mediocre, so he filled it with a bunch of, to put it mildly, peculiar details that should show us all the originality of the director’s thoughts. For example, the main character, instead of being normally satisfied with a girl of easy virtue, prefers to watch how she satisfies herself. Or a police officer who practices unconventional interrogation techniques that involve piercing eyes and eardrums. And about the mother thinking about the size of her sons’ genitals, I’m generally silent! And then you begin to think – either the author is a little sick in the head, or is simply unable to attract the viewer’s attention to his picture with anything other than this kind of senseless provocation… Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle.

And yet, the picture is not without its positive sides. Firstly, this is a magnificent soundtrack written by a magnificent composer – Cliff Martinez (by God, he can be called the Hans Zimmer of the world of auteur cinema). Largely thanks to his melodies, it is possible not to notice the periodic sagging of the direction.
And secondly, these are the characters. More precisely, the heroes of Ryan Gosling and Vithaya Pansringarm. They are perhaps the only ones in the film who understand what is fair, what is not and what revenge can lead to. And even though by the will of fate they ended up on opposite sides of the law, only they can understand each other in the current situation.

As a result, we have not just a strange film, but a real art house that will probably alienate most viewers, but will strike a special chord in some people. Therefore, it is simply impossible to give an unambiguous assessment of this film. But still watch at your own risk.
